Child Support

Memphis Child Support Lawyers

For some divorced or divorcing parents of young children, it is not easy to understanding their parental rights and responsibilities in child support matters. At Causey & Caywood, Attorneys at Law, we've wisely, accurately, and successfully advised clients with child support issues for more than four decades.

Whether you're divorcing, separating, or simply no longer together, child support is of consistent and paramount importance. Our experienced, diplomatic family law attorneys will help you make sense of Tennessee’s state child support guidelines.

The Basics

Child support is owed and payable until the youngster reaches the age of 18. If they haven't graduated from high school by then, the child support payments continue until graduation from high school, or until age 19 if the child is a full-time student residing with a parent.

Calculations of child support are based on the net incomes of both parents, and the amount of time that the child spends in the care of each parent. The higher the net income, the higher the rate of child support.

All income from all sources is factored into calculations of the amount of child support.

The Expenses

Child care expenses are divided between the parents on a more or less equal basis, and are considered additional child support.

Both parents are required to provide medical insurance for minor children if the coverage is available at a nominal cost, or no cost at all, through their work, union, or other related affiliation.

Medical expenses that go uncovered by insurance, such as co-pays, are generally divided equally between the parents.

The Enforcement

An experienced family law attorney can help a parent acquire an order for the appropriate amount of child support, and follow through to make sure that the order is enforced. We can also represent either parent in a child support modification proceeding - in case personal, health, or financial circumstances change - or in proceedings to identify or nullify paternity.

Remember: the long-term well-being of your children is at stake. Child support issues in a divorce are of utmost urgency. The assistance of an experienced child custody lawyer is essential to the process of a smooth transition. You can get that assistance at the Memphis offices of Causey & Caywood, Attorneys at Law.
